Trees and Me

2005 Program Overview

Starting in early spring, Trees and Me, under the direction of Ellen LeCompte of The East Village Parks Conservancy, and E.Jay Sims, art teacher and gardner, organized weekly workshops for local public school teachers and students to help them start children's garden projects in their schools.

Weekly sessions:

Session 1 - A park ranger helped launch the program and students decorated their garden folders.

Session 2 - EVCS students studied trees and did some pruning; PS-34 students learned about about twigs and buds.

Session 3 - PS-34 got help from high school volunteers who tilled the soil.

Session 4 - A landscape architect came to EVCS with garden plans and students dug in the playground plots to loosen the soil.

Session 5 - EVCS and PS-34 students worked on paper collages of their garden ideas.

Session 6 - A professional gardener came to PS-34 and students dug and planted in the soil. Some students built a stone path.

Session 7 - PS-34 students planted more bedding plants to finish off the plot.

Session 8 - PS-34 students made flower headbands, crowns and leis to wear in the final celebration.

Session 9 - Celebration at PS-34 with songs and a procession to honor the renewal of the FDR Children's Garden.
