Trees and Me

An environmental education outreach program for children.

TWO WINNERS in 2006!

2006 - the program at PS34 in the East Village won the top Golden Apple Award in the 2006 NYC Sanitation Department's Team Up to Clean Up Program. Now in its 2nd year, Ellen LeCompte and the teachers of PS 34 worked with 1st grade students to continue to develop their garden.

An additional program involving The Bronx Expeditionary Learning High School has been launched. This project, to ressurect a neglected interior courtyard on the Taft High School Campus, also won the Bronx Borough Honorable Mention in the 2006 Golden Apple Awards.

Child's view of a future garden.
2005 - the program provided a hands-on experience for children in reclaiming neglected garden plots at two neighborhood schools. Students from PS34 and the East Village Community School (EVCS) worked on making children's gardens. A landscape architect volunteered design ideas for each school that students began to implement. As part of the curriculum, experts-in-the-field such as local gardeners, NYC Parks gardeners and a National Park Ranger, came to talk to the children about various aspects of gardening and the environment. The program introduced hands-on gardening tasks and promoted nature art projects.
